Font Metrics Guide

CLIENT

The Bachelor's in Fine Arts program (B.F.A.) in Communication Design for Texas State University is a curriculum that provides advance studies within communication design.

Challenge

Create a font metrics guide that analyzes 50 different typefaces, with the font Jenson Pro as a benchmark for comparison. Provide a physical guidebook, branding, and promotional assets.

IDENTITY

To make typeface analysis more approachable, I incorporated trendy gradients and type treatments into the branding of the font metrics guide.

Guidebook

Each spread analyzes and compares one of 50 typefaces with Jenson Pro to highlight what makes that particular typeface unique. Some comparable attributes include:

  • line lengths (at 10pt)

  • cap height

  • x-height

  • ascenders

  • descenders

  • stem weight (% of the x-height)

For an interactive experience, I designed a transparent "bookmark" of the Jenson Pro typeface as a tool for readers to compare and identify unique attributes . The user can simply line up the baselines of the two fonts (the line that “Hexph” sits on) and analyze.

The letters that make up “Hexph” were chosen because together they make up the major characteristics of a letter.

Poster

Promotional posters would be displayed near San Marcos and Austin universities to attract designers, analysts, and type nerds.
